20th July – a day to remember.
20th
July proved to be a momentous day for Auckland Castle, as it transferred, at
one minute before six in the evening, into the hands of the Auckland Castle
Trust. This is a daunting as well as an exciting moment – we carry with us a
great deal of expectation for the future, as well as a respect for the heritage
and history attached to the Castle’s past. And we were delighted to mark our
launch with a Royal Visit – Prince Charles visited the Castle on 23rd July and
unveiled a plaque commemorating the start of the new era for the Castle. He was
presented with a leather bound copy of Dr Robert McManners’ book on the Zurbaran
paintings, copies of which can be found in our shop.
Of
course, we cannot move with great fleet–footedness on all fronts, but we hope
that you will see some changes – improvements to the gardens coming with an
increase in investment, a start of a programme of public events to complement
the private events (weddings and other celebrations) that are already underway.
In particular, we hope that you will come to the exciting Fools Festival on
August Bank Holiday Monday, and help us to crown the Auckland Fool from amongst
the cream of Street Theatre talent that this country has to offer, and for
those that enjoy a more high–brow evening, we would like you to join us for a
black tie literary dinner in October. More details will follow – keep your eyes
on this website, and on our twitter feed (@aucklandcastle).
