Convocation

07/2007

The Economist Group art commission was awarded to Sparks for their site-specific installation: The first time a design studio has won the commission. Passers-by were stopped in their tracks as they walked past the Economist Plaza off St James Street near Piccadilly: A green carpet invited them into the Plaza to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the traffic.

Leading up the steps to the square and snaking across the plaza and up a rounded hill, a 40 metre pathway of artificial grass broke into the severe business environment. The soft green hillock contrasted with the ubiquitous concrete and glass square building with an effect which was both surprising and natural, people gathered on it to eat their lunch and have a chat.
